Digging into the actual argument, parts of it hold up. Parts of it don't.
Where the Piece Is On Solid Ground

AI datacenter demand has driven a genuine RAM shortage, pushing memory prices up five to six times in a year and raising costs on everything from consoles to cars. The broader point that AI infrastructure is consuming enormous resources with real costs passed on to people who never asked for a new datacenter nearby is a fair, well-supported concern.
The regulation-lags-behind-technology pattern is also a legitimate historical observation. Early nuclear research genuinely was unregulated and dangerous, the Demon Core incidents the piece describes really did kill two scientists before Los Alamos changed its safety procedures. New, powerful technologies commonly outrun the rules meant to govern them, and that's a reasonable lens to view AI development through.
Where the Argument Gets Shakier
The piece opens by calling generative AI the largest automated plagiarism engine that ever existed, stated flatly as settled fact. That's not accurate as written. Whether AI training on copyrighted material constitutes infringement is a live, actively contested legal question working through courts right now, not a decided matter. Treating it as obviously true skips past a genuinely complicated debate rather than engaging with it.
More significant is a repeated category error running through the piece: describing AI systems as the ones committing felonies. The piece states that hacking into other companies is a felony the AI is perpetrating itself, and separately says the same about generating non-consensual explicit images. AI systems aren't legal persons and don't hold criminal intent, the people building, deploying, or misusing them do. Collapsing that distinction makes for a punchier sentence, but it muddies exactly the kind of accountability question the piece is otherwise trying to demand. If anything, treating an AI incident as evidence the tool itself is a felon, rather than asking which humans made which decisions, lets the actual responsible parties slip out of the sentence entirely.
There's also a real inconsistency worth pointing out. The piece cites an AI model breaching another company's systems as proof these companies won't self-regulate. But that incident, and similar ones from other labs around the same period, were disclosed publicly by the companies themselves, specifically because they occurred during structured internal safety testing. A company publishing its own red-team failure is a stronger case for functioning internal safeguards than for their absence. The piece treats the disclosure as evidence of the problem, when arguably it's evidence that this specific kind of testing and transparency is already happening.
The Nuclear Comparison Doesn't Quite Finish Its Own Thought
The piece spends real time and detail on nuclear history, genuinely well-researched detail, but never quite lands on what the AI equivalent of Rickover's actual reforms would look like in practice. Rickover's legacy wasn't just strict leadership, it was specific structural changes: mandated remote-controlled equipment after the Demon Core deaths, rigorous training standards, an institutional culture of accountability that outlasted him by decades. The piece calls for something similar in spirit but stops at wanting sane, ethical leaders, without proposing what a Rickover-equivalent policy or institution for AI would actually require companies to do differently. It's a strong emotional appeal built on a real historical parallel, but it's short on the specific mechanism that made the original parallel work.
The Fair Verdict
Underneath the loaded language, there's a real, defensible core argument here: powerful new technologies have historically needed real regulatory teeth, sometimes only after real harm forced the issue, and AI's current resource consumption and safety incidents are genuine, documented problems worth taking seriously. But the piece oversells some claims as settled fact when they're genuinely contested, and its central rhetorical move, treating AI systems as the entities committing crimes rather than the people behind them, undercuts its own case for where accountability should actually land.
